5/30/2023 0 Comments Novel cranford![]() Middle-class people who admit to being “poor” or “unable to afford” something are social piranhas. People with the wrong manners or even the wrong name are shunned. From the beginning, though, we learn that there are certain social manners that are “required” to be followed. It is a town of predominately middle-aged, middle-class women, most of whom are spinsters or widows. I think what I disliked most about Cranford-the-town was the superficiality of all the people. ![]() I definitely want to read more of Gaskell’s writing. Some day, I think I’ll revisit this book. But in the end, it all comes full circle for me and I almost want to reread the portions that irritated me in the beginning. I wasn’t sure I liked Elizabeth’s Gaskell’s Cranford for most of my reading, and to be honest, the snippets of life in the town of Cranford irritated me at first. ![]() Yes, everything would be alright in Miss Matty Jenkyn’s town of Cranford.
